Background information
The CatChain project at the Invernizzi Center for Research on Innovation, Organization, Strategy and Entrepreneurship (ICRIOS) in Bocconi University invites young scholars to submit extended abstracts for presentation of original manuscripts at the 1st Workshop on “Micro-dynamics, Catching-Up and Global Value Chains” to take place in the city of Milan, Italy on December 4th-6th, 2019. PhD students, postdoctoral fellows and early stage researchers/assistant professors are particularly encouraged to apply. This workshop is part of the scientific activities that take place within the project “Catching–Up along the Global Value Chain: models, determinants and policy implications in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution” (CatChain), funded by the European Commission through the Marie Skłodowska Curie Actions program.
Conference Objectives
The Conference aims at bringing to the city of Milan up to 5 young researchers to present and discuss their original (unpublished) research on issues related to Micro-dynamics, Catching-Up and Global Value Chains in Latin America, Asia or Africa, with top senior scholars at the fields of Evolutionary Economics, Innovation and International Economics. Some of the confirmed senior scholars that will participate at this workshop include Gary Gereffi (Duke University), Keun Lee (Seoul National University), Carlota Perez (University of Sussex), Mammo Muchie (Tshwane University of Technology), Nicholas Vonortas (The George Washington University), Sunil Mani (Centre for Development Studies), Carlo Pietrobelli (University Roma Tre), Roberta Rabellotti (University of Pavia) and, Franco Malerba (Bocconi University).
Submission guidelines for extended abstracts
Strong preference will be given to quantitative work that focuses on micro-level analysis of manufacturing and services activities in Emerging Economies (Latin America, Asia, Africa). Specific topics of interest for the workshop include, but are not limited to:
• Micro-level determinants of catching-up/productivity in manufacturing and services.
• Micro-level performance of domestic producers, MNEs, exporting firms (export processing zones).
• Firm-level evidence on sectoral and national innovation systems and on industrial upgrading.
• The role of SMEs/Start-ups to catching-up/Global Value Chains.
• Analysis linking Input-Output tables with micro-level information.
Interested participants must submit their extended abstracts (a maximum of 5 pages in pdf format) and a short CV by Tuesday, May 15th 2019 to firstconference@catchain.eu.
A maximum of 5 extended abstracts (papers) will be accepted for final presentation at the workshop.
Accepted abstracts and travel grants
The CatChain project will provide accommodation and reimburse travel costs (roundtrip economy class) for the 5 young scholars with accepted abstracts, upon successful submission of their finished manuscripts by September 1st,, 2019. Only the presenting (corresponding) author is eligible for the travel grant.

About the CatChain project
This is a project built on a multidisciplinary and multisectoral joint exchange program that focuses on the role of entry, learning and upgrading in fostering a process of country-level catching-up in different sectoral systems. Using the value chain approach, it analyses the opportunities and challenges for Small and Medium Enterprises’ (SMEs) industrial upgrading in the globalising economy. The project will also examine the policy implications related to how Research and Innovation Smart Specialization (RIS3) can be implemented by institutions, with respect to the new agenda of Europe 2020, especially for low-income EU countries.
