The amount of informal economic activity is rising globally, especially in the least developed and developing countries. This is seen to be a result of neo-liberal policies that have become increasingly prominent, and the withdrawal of the welfare state. The academic world has also shifted its thinking in an attempt to understand this informal sector. Rather than focusing only on exploitative labour conditions, it now examines this sector’s possible contributions in generating economic growth and generating employment.
